Today, the groundbreaking ceremony for the Shihen Potato Industry Group Co., Ltd. Shangdu Tissue Culture Center project was held with great pomp and circumstance in Qitai Town, Shangdu County, Inner Mongolia, officially marking the start of construction on this ambitious project.

Since the project was approved, government departments and leaders at both the Ulanqab City and Shangdu County levels have shown great attention and provided unwavering support. It is precisely because of this dedication and backing that the project has been able to commence construction smoothly.

With a total investment of over 200 million yuan and covering an area of 31,500 square meters, the facility can annually produce 150 million virus-free seedlings—making it the largest of its kind in China.

Following the Shandong Leling Base and the Beijing Yanqing Base, Hissen Potato Industry Group has meticulously built another high-standard, state-of-the-art tissue culture center.

The facility boasts first-class domestic equipment and infrastructure, including a potato virus detection laboratory, a potato shoot-tip virus-freeing laboratory, a culture medium preparation workshop, a stem segment propagation workshop, a potato tissue culture room, and a disinfection & washing facility—among others. It is equipped with state-of-the-art nationwide tissue culture equipment, an advanced seedling cultivation monitoring system covering the entire process, an automated culture medium filling and bottling line, as well as employee air shower passages.

Equipped with 1,000 greenhouses dedicated to original seed propagation, the facility can produce 400 million original seeds annually.

A branch center of the National Engineering Research Center for Potato (NERCP) has been established in sync, ensuring high-quality potato seeds are available to farmers across the country.

The Wanping workshop rises from the ground—turning potatoes into something truly remarkable.

Once the project is completed, it will be capable of producing 400 million micro-tubers annually—enough to meet the seed requirements for 80,000 acres of original seed cultivation. This, in turn, will enable the company to supply 3 million tons of high-quality virus-free seed potatoes nationwide, sufficient to support large-scale field planting across 18 million acres—and ultimately help lift 1.6 million farmers out of poverty and into prosperity. By that time, combined with the Leling and Yanqing bases, Hissen Potato Industry Group will have an annual production capacity of 800 million micro-tubers, satisfying nearly half of the country’s total potato-seed demand.

Once the project is completed, it will directly create 300 jobs and indirectly support 3,000 farmers, boosting their average annual income by 5,000 yuan. This will effectively address the employment challenges faced by the surplus labor force in the surrounding area.

After the project is completed, Shangdu will achieve complete self-sufficiency in both original seed potatoes and basic seed potatoes, helping the region establish a comprehensive three-tiered virus-free seed potato propagation system. This will further enhance Shangdu's capacity and expertise in seed potato breeding, accelerating the development of Shangdu as the "Seed Potato Capital."

Once the project is completed, it will further strengthen the foundational position of potatoes as the region's key industry, helping to transform the potato sector into a flagship industry for targeted poverty alleviation and boosting farmers' incomes. This will significantly enhance local households' earnings, ultimately enabling the potato industry to play a vital role in driving efforts to eradicate poverty and improve rural livelihoods.
